Abstract The pancreas is retroperitoneal organ , lies infront of the first lumbar vertebrae, and is about 15 cm long. Histologically, the pancreas is composed of exocrine acini and group of endocrine cells(the islets of langerhans) other distinct small groups and single scattered endocrine cells. These endocrine cells secrete different types of hormones or peptides. Each cell type is named according to the main hormone secreted; some of these peptides have a known physiological functions. Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (PET) are rare neoplasms of the pancreas accounting for less than 5% of all primary pancreatic malignancies. The incidence of these tumors is estimated to be less than l-l.5 Cases/100,000 of the general population. |
