Abstract

Whenever possible, the enteral route should be used in preference to the parenteral route for administration of nutrients.
If patients with cancer, especially of the GIT, are undergoing surgery, then perioperative nutritional support should be given for an adequate period of time perioperatively to those patients identified as being severely malnourished.
This study was conducted on 40 patients divided into two equal groups. One of them had major elective gastrointestinal surgery with placing a Jejunostomy feeding tube at the time of the primary procedure. The other group had major elective gastrointestinal surgery without Jejunostomy feeding tube with assessment of both groups preoperative and postoperative.
This study showed that nutrition risk index (NRI) to be of value in identifying such patients.
On the other hand, early postoperative Enteral feeding by Jejunostomy tube in selected patients leads to reduction of postoperative complications and hospital stay, as this study showed a trend in this direction, supporting previous studies in the literature. These studies, together with ours suggest a reduction in postoperative morbidity, with no effect on mortality.
They also agreed that in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal resection procedures, feeling Jejunostomy is safe, simple and economic.
