Abstract This research is addressing architects, environmental planners, governmental personnel, parents, teachers as well as the concerned public with the social dimension of architectural space and how it reflects on the urban environment specifically for children in outdoor places. It relates to the problem of how spaces are interpreted, used and classified, and concludes by recommendations based on each social group’s requirements. The fore-mentioned issues are discussed in two parts: 1. The literature and analytical review begins with the understanding of the elements and structure of communities, urban environment, factors affecting the urban environment and architecture space; followed by a description of indoor spaces and outdoor spaces; and the special social categories’ requirements. This section concludes by an analysis of outdoor spaces in Alexandria City, specifically those designated for children use. 2. The related case study involves an analytical study of outdoor spaces in Alexandria City and the evaluation of outdoor recreational spaces for children based on the outcome of the designed parameters in an attempt to form a more suitable lexicon for measures and assessment. |
