Abstract

This research studies the effect different parameters such as loading angle, crack length, specimen thickness and applied load on the stress distribution and displacement fields at crack tip, stress intensity factors and crack propagation angle in the case of 2D and 3D modeling. COSMOS/M 2.0 code has been employed fields and the angle of crack growth. Analytical analysis was also made in order verify the results of the finite element modeling. Experiment procedures were made in order to estimate the effect of loading angle on the crack growth angle unreinforced AL 2024 alloy.
The results of this study show that mixed mode stress intensity factor (KI-II) generally increased, in the crack tip region, with increasing loading angle, crack length, and applied load, while it decreased as the specimen thickness increased at constant load. The dirction of the crack growth has been determined based on the maximum principle stress. The results show that the angle of crack propagation was found to be independent of crack and specimen geometry of the crack and specimen has no effect on the angle of crack growth. The obtained numerical results were compared and discussed with the results of analytical in AL 2024 T4 reinforced with 10 vol.% silicon carbide participles and the comparison between the results of two methods beside the experimental procedures in unreinforced Al 2024 alloy.
