Abstract

The main target of this study was to obtain an integrated system for treating textile stry effluents containing the recalcitrant azo dyes and to ensure that the qualil) of the ted water meets the slringesl standards set by Jaws as well as the safe reuse.
^Testing a Multistage Textile Wastewater Treatment System
A multistage sequential treatment system was investigated for the treatment of Je wastewater (TWW). The system was designed to include three different types of icnts, anaerobic, aerobic and activated carbon. This system consisted of five steps; Jy, anaerobic treatment (step I); secondly; aerobic treatment, which was carried out in successive compartments packed with three different beds: poriferous tile (step II), cium carbonate (step III) and red tile (step IV). Right after the. aerobic step the

fewaler was treated in a fifth step of activated carbon (step V). IIRTs ranged from Ihr fiO days. The results of using this system can be summarised in (he following:
reversal relationship between HRT and chemical oxygen demand (COD) (concentration was evident. The anaerobic step gave the highest COD reduction Ipercenlage (28.5%). There were slight variations in COD removal efiiciencies between [the three aerobic steps (10, 12.8 and 16.5%). The average value of COD removal for the [activated carbon step was 14%.
