Abstract

This investigation is performed on the removal of copper and chromate ion from electroplating rinsing water, electrochemical cation and anion exchange resin process was lIsed. The electrochemical cation and anion exchange resin process is a relatively new technique in which the application of a direct current electrochcmical potcntial is lIsed to enhance the process, this technique however has not been extensively studied to reach a large scale application. Electrochemical ion exchange process is a recently developed electrical process for removing ions from electroplating rinsing water by adsorhing them on the surface of a fixed hed from ion exchange resins. Two different types of ionic exchange resins were used, cation exchange resins to remove copper ion and anion exchange resins to remove chromate ion. These ions can be subsequently illuted from the ion exchange material. The experiments were carried out at di fferent operating conditions and their effect on the removal process was studied. The removal process of copper ions from electroplating rinsing water is usually expressed in terms of four paramcters, namely, initial copper ion concentration, current density, flow rate and pH but in case of chromate ion removal two parameters were used the flow rate and current density. The study is divided into three parts, the first part covers the effect of operating parameters on coppcr removal process (with and \vithout using electrical potential) and a comparison was carried out between them. The second part covers the effect of operating parameters on chromate removal process (with and without using electrical potential) and a comparison was made between them. The third part covers discussion and recommendation for the study of experimental part. The experimental part was performed as a continuous process. All operating conditions were under control to give accurate results and at an ambient temperature.
‎Two methods were used for copper ion removal:-
‎1- Electrochemical cation exchange resins process (with using electrical potential). 2- Cation exchange resins process (without using electrical potential).
‎Rcsults of the two methods showed that the removal efficiency decreases with increasing (initial copper ion concentration (Co», flow rate, current density and increases with
‎increasing pH value and vice versa.
‎The results we obtained from the first and the second method indicate that the maximum efficiency which equals 99.65% and 91.(,%.
‎Comparison was done between the two methods indicate that, the improvcment ill the removal percentage of Cu2’ as a result of using the lirst method == R.O) I~/;).
‎Also the two other methods were used for chromate ions removal:-
‎1- Electrochemical anion exchange resins process (with using electrical potential). 2- Anion exchange resins process (without using electrical potential).
‎And also the obtained results from the first and the second method indicate that the maximum removal efficiency which equals 99.5% and 90.3%.
‎Comparison was done between the two methods indicate that, the improvement III the
‎removal percentage of CrO~’ as a result of using the first method = 9.2 %.
