Abstract

Respiratory diseases can cause considerable disability in the elderly because of their limited respiratory reserve as a result of aging.
Prevalence of COPD is strongly associated with age. Respiratory symptoms increase in prevalence with age.
This clinical thesis was done to study the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and their relation with pulmonary functions in Egyptian elderly.
500 elderly men and women 60 years old and over, living in nursing homes in Cairo were assessed. A questionnaire assessing respiratory symptoms, mental state, depression, and activities of daily living was applied to the whole sample. Weight and height was measured for each subject. FEV1, FVC, and PFR were measured for all of them except for 16 females who refused.
It was found that prevalence rate of chronic bronchitis was 12.3%, and that of airway obstruction was 2.4%.
Respiratory symptoms and diseases were more prevalent among males than females, and more among smokers than ex-smokers, than never-smokers.
