Abstract D ementia is a syndrome due to disease of the brain, usually of a chronic or progressive nature in which there is disturbance of multiple higher cortical functions, including memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language and judgment (World Health Organization, 1992). Consciousness is not clouded, impairment of cognitive function are commonly accompanied and occasionally preceded by deterioration in emotional control, social behavior or motivation. Dementia is essentially a disease of the aged. Over the age of 65, about 5% have severe dementia and 15% have mild dementia. Of all patients with dementia, 50 to 60% have dementia of Alzheimer type, most common type of dementia. About 5% of all persons who reach age 65 have dementia of Alzheimer type. The second most common type of dementia is vascular dementia i.e. dementia related to cerebrovascular diseases. It accounts for 15 to 30% of all dementia. Other causes of dementia representing 1 to 5% of all cases include head trauma, alcohol related dementia, various movement disorder related dementias for e.g. Huntington’s disease and Parkinson’s disease (Kaplan |
