Abstract

City urban fabric undergoes many changes and pollution effects which result in an unhealthy and unorganized environment. Building forms and densities have direct effect on the built environment; that is why there exits standards and codes to monitor the building design and process. Regulation parameters are controlled through codes that are often violated by unconscious planning. Implementing existing building regulations generate current urban image encountered in our city, therefore the research is concerned with creating a tool to test the effect of the changing variables of building standards and codes.
The Building Regulation Tester (BRT) is a Decision Support System developed to assist urban designers, planners and policy makers to explore and evaluate possible urban layouts and their growth patterns. Package utilized to help planners to visualize various forms resulting from the application of building regulation codes.
The idea was that a piece of city could be modeled on the computer and an urban design study would then be carried out to test varying options for development. The expected results in an outline, but three dimensional, design model for an area ; it be used in different ways, as a briefing tool to aid effective negotiation and consultation at the planning design stage.
BRT can play an effective role in the development process as aids in decision-making. Derive the set of relevant views and the corresponding set of regulation parameters and values. In developing the model for studying the built environment we need to work on a location plan with identified land lot boundaries.
The regulation values are continuously changing in time due to the factors controlled mostly by the decision maker. Default values are given to different variables as guidelines for the decision maker; who can as well assign limits to different variables to produce final images for building envelope and iterate these variables to experience new produced images. Each reached solution is stored and shown as three dimensional models according to the actions taken by the planner.
The core of the system consists of a modeling shell specifying building code variables. These modules are created by Visual Basic for Application (VBA) under AutoDesk CAD environment and Windows XP System.
