Abstract

Pipeline has an effective role in the field of liquids transpiration specially water transportation. This work deals with theoretical and experimental study of the environmental impact assessment of water-hammer in pipeline system and its control. Pressure wave, at the pipeline system, which simulates the system in irrigation sector, can be predicted by using the characteristic method. The computer program is developed to predict the pressure wave due to power failure for the irrigation main pumping station. Through this program the available data about pump, motor, pipeline and the dimensionless complete pump characteristic data that describe the pump specifications as possible are used . The effect of pipe support type and using complete pump characteristic data for another pumps on the pressure wave are discussed. The direct impacts of water-hammer are presented. An environmental model for environmental impact assessment is presented. The main parameters to prepare the assessment are the pressure variation, vibration level and noise level. The unallowable values for these parameters can affect both the pipeline structure and labors. Experimental measurements are conducted at experimental prototype to record the vibration levels due to sudden closing of the control valve located at the end of the pipeline as a source of water-hammer. The measurements were conducted at El-Salhiya and El-Shabab main pumping stations. Through the using of the environmental observation systems, the pressure graph, vibration level and noise level during the different operation conditions ware recorded in order to evaluate the operation condition and water-hammer control system. Through this investigation, conclusions and recommendations are presented.
