Abstract

The aim of this study is to use remote sensing and GIS techniques as modern tools to urban - environment related problems. It also aims to highlight the environmental :ts resulting from random growth of cities in Egypt due to absence of future planning i powerful control of governmental land as well as good land use management system. j coastal urban fringe located at the western side of Alexandria is selected to be the site f&is research. This area consists mainly of Mex, Dekhaila, and Agamy. These HIS are noticed to experience a rapidly dramatic urban growth during last s.This growth was observed to take place without proper planning and no icntal considerations were taken into account. The main objectives of this study two issues. First, defining and assessing land use changes in the study area based and current land use and urban growth patterns. Second, assessing the bad impacts changes on the environment with particular attention given to find out the >n characteristics of waterlogged areas and possible reasons of this phenomena that \ affects some locations within the study area. The analytical capabilities of GIS aed to be used to carry out land use change analysis, suitability analysis , and other required to achieve the objectives of this research.
available about the study area are collected. They involve environmental as, socioeconomic and census data, and geological and geomorphological
sties. Two satellite images covering the study area found available. These two are acquired by Landsat-5, MSS sensor in 1985 and 1991. A hardcopy of a
SPOT image in 1993 was available as the recent land use pattern. Land use and lie maps of the study area in 1952, 1983 are also obtained as well as a map of ria 2005 comprehensive plan.
