Abstract

SUMMARY
This thesis concerns the study of the equilibria of nalidixic acid, gycine and the metal complexes with the divalent metal ions cobalt(I1), nickel(1I), copper(II) and zinc(II), as well as the complex formation equilibria of the ternary complexes of nalidixic acid and glycine with the above mentioned metal ions. The medium used was 50% (v/v) ethanol-water, with the ionic strength adjusted to OJOOM using potassium chloride.
The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first is an introductory chapter which points out the importance of complex formation reactions between metal ions and biologically active ligands in biochemistry and in therapy, and then describes the biological activity and mode of action of nalidixic acid as a drug.
This chapter continues with an exhaustive survey of the solution equilibria of nalidixic acid, and ends with a selective description of the solution equilibria of glycine.
The second chapter is concerned with the experimental and up-to-date computational techniques used. Potentiometric titrations at the glass-Ag/AgC1 electrode system were employed, this being the method of choice for studying protonation and complex formation equilibria, as it is the most accurate .
