Abstract

The present study is carried out on 18 clinically healthy animals (9 donkeys and 9 goats) of both sexes. Their ages ranged from 4-7 years for donkeys and 2-5 years for goats. Body weight ranged from 150 to 200 kg. and 30 to 45 kg. for donkeys and goats, respectively. The animals were randomly divided into two main groups (9 donkeys and 9 goats). Each group is divided into 3 sub groups each of 3 animals, in which three drugs were injected intravenously (xylazine, detomidine and romifidine). After two weeks these drugs were given epidurally to the same animals. Combination of xylazine/butorphanol, detomidine/butorphanol and romifidine/butorphnol was injected intravenously in each sub group with another two weeks interval.
After drug injection, the onset and duration of sedation, analgesia andrecumbency were determined. Clinical observation for rectal temperature, pulse and respiration were recorded 5 mm. before and 15, 45, 75 and 120 miiis. after injection. Haemat-obiochemical analysis of blood samples collected from jugular vein at the same intervals for Hb, PCV, DLC, serum urea, AST, ALT and creatinine.
- Signs of sedation in donkeys were observed 3.00 + 0.57 mm post IV xylazine injection and continued for 53.66 ± 0.88 mm.
- Detomidine and romifidine produced marked sedation than xylazine for 105.00 + 17.32 mm. and 86.33 ± 0.88 mm. for each drug, respectively.
- Detomidine resulted in marked ataxia than xylazine and romifidine.
- Xylazine and romifidine produced analgesia in perineal region, tail and hind quarter for 44.00 ± 2.81 and 68.33 mm. Detomidine resulted in analgesia in hind quarter and extended cranially till the last rib and hind limbs till the level of hock joints. It was continued for 88.00 ± 8.66 mm. Both xylazine and detomidine resulted in significant reduction of respiratory rate while rectal temperature reduced significantly post detomidine and romifidine. Pulse rate reduced significantly after injection of either of the three drugs
- Mild signs of sedation were observed post epidural injection of xylazine in donkeys for 61.33 ± 0.88 mm, with mild ataxia. Analgesia in perineal region with mild bilateral analgesia extended cranially till 3rd lumber vertebra after 13.33 ± 2.02 mm and continued for 90.00 ± 5.77 mm. Significant reduction of both respiratory and pulse rates were observed.
- Detomidipe resulted in marked signs of sedation continued for 105.00 ± 2.88 mm. Complete analgesia reaching the level of last three ribs was observed after 2.66±0.66mm for 58.33 ± 10.13 mm. Significant reduction of both respiratory rate, rectal temperature and pulse rate was observed.
- Romifidine produced mild sedation for 75.00 + 2.88 mm with perineal and tail analgesia continued for 85.00 + 2.88 mm. significant reduction of rectal temperature and pulse rate was observed.
