Abstract

Diseases of the thyroid gland are much more common in women than in men and occur not uncommonly in pregnant women. Hypothyroidism occurring after puberty can cause a variety of changes in a woman’s menstrual periods including irregularity, heavy periods, or loss of periods. When hypothyroidism is severe, it can reduce a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant. Checking thyroid gland functions is an important part of evaluating a woman who failed to be pregnant. If detected, an underactive thyroid gland can be easily treated with thyroid hormone replacement therapy (Montoro, 1997).
