Abstract

Studies involve the metabolic activation and/or detoxification of chemical carcinogens and the consequent biochemical effects were of a prime importance in the initial characterization of the role played by cytochrome(s) P-450 isoenzymes in the induction of liver cancer. A great deal of effort has been concerned with identifying the possible alterations in the gene expression that might take place in the development of liver cancer.
The present study has been under taken to evaluate and quantify the possible alterations of gene expression in the liver cytochrome(s) P-450 during different stages of liver cancer induced by chemical carcinogens, particularly, aflatoxin B^.
Several chemical carcinogens could not initiate hepatocellular carcinomas because they are not probable inducers of liver cell death. Partial hepatectomy, on the other side, was found to be a good inducer for the development of liver cancer when combined with a brief exposure to a chemical carcinogen. Such a protocol was the basis on which the study of the possible alterations in gene expression of cytochrome(s) P-450 protein have been carried out during the different stages of liver cancer development.
