Abstract

The proliferation of cellular communication systems in and around man-made structures has resulted in a growing need to determine the shielding properties of various
‎ . ,
‎materials commonly used in buildings to determine the base station radiation effects to
‎elcctronic systems and human body.
‎In this thesis, the shielding effectiveness of buildings elements are studied, such as reiDfon:ed concrete walls, masonry block walls and red brick walls. Also the shielding cffcctivcncss of buildings apertures with different thirteen designs is calculated; finally the 8hielding effcctiveness of glass plates is calculated. The last section is the evaluation of conductive polymers ability to be useful shields for building~.
‎The analysis of shielding effectiveness is performed numerically using fmite difference time domain method. Specific softw~ is developed to be compatible with composite materials and complex structures.
‎In chapter one, the basic defmitions of elec~magl\etic compatibility is summarized in addition to a small section about base station ante~as an4 its emitted power densities.
‎In chapter two, the classical theory of electromagnetic shielding is discussed using the transmission line model, the modeling of cross field. multimedia and laminated shielding .
‎ • !
‎Fi.nally the evaluation of shielding effectiveness using nurperical methods is presented and
‎discussed.
‎Chapter three contains the basic theory and algorithms of fmite difference time domain. Chapter four focuses in basic buildings walls analysis. Chapter five present the models of apertures and thier related shielding effectiveness values in addition to glass analysis. Chapter six explains the advantages of conductive coatings and conductive polymers in shielding .
