Abstract

The present study was carried out at the Pediatric Nephrology Unit, Children’s Hospital, Ain Shams University during the period from December 1999 till May 2000. It included 50 patients with nephrotic syndrome (40 patients were on steroid treatment and 10 patients were stopped steroids). It also included 71 patients with CRF (21 patients on conservative treatment and 50 patients on maintenance HD).
In this study, we attempted to assess the possible ocular changes that might affect patients suffering from chronic renal diseases.
Cataracts was found in 10% of patients with nephrotic syndrome , in 12% of patients with CRF on maintenance HD, and in 4.7% of CRF patients on conservative treatment. Conjunctival and limbal calcification was detected in 6% of CRF patients on maintenance HD. Glaucoma was detected in 4.7% of CRF patients on conservative treatment.
