Abstract

Fibrocystic.rlisease of the breast is a heterogenous group oflesions that occur clinically in 50% and histologically in 90% of breast masses in women. According to the relative risk of subsequent development of invasive breast cancer, three main categories ofthe disease were defined, which are: non proliferatvie disease (cysts, simple apocrine metaplasia without hyperplasia, adenosis other than sclerosing adenosis and mild
epithelial hyperplasia), proliferative disease without atypia (sclerosing adenosis, moderate and florid hyperplasia) and atypical hyperplasia (lobular or ductal).
There is extensive standing regarding to DNA analysis of invasive breast carcinoma and there are several reports ofDNA analysis and cell cycle of ductal carcinoma insitu. But there is little informations regarding cell cycle, S-phase fraction analysis and DNA content in fibrocystic disease ofthe breast. The aim of this work was to study the SPF of different components of fibrocystic disease using image analyzer to detect those lesions with a relatively high SPF to through a light on the pathologic significance ofthis marker in the early diagnosis ofhigh risk group that is predicted to undergo cancer breast development. This study was carried out on’ 31 cases ofbreast lesions (25 cases of fibrocystic disease and 6 cases of malignant breast lesions), selected from the archive of the Pathology Department and ECDU,Zagazig. Faculty of Medicine.
