Abstract

The present investigation was planned to study the pathogenesis and characterization of Vibrio species isolated from naturally infected Mugil cephalus showing clinical lesions.
The major objectives of this study were:
a. Isolation of Vibrio species from naturally infected cultured Mugil cephalus.
b. Determination of the pathogenesis of V. ordalli in both Anguilla and Oreochromis ,iioticus by estimation of the lethal dose 50 (LD50), as well as induction of infection experimentally.
c. Attempt to evaluate the vaccine that would effectively protect Anguila anguilla against experimental infection with isolated Vibrio ordalii.
The results achieved from the study are sumnarized in the following points:
1. Ten isolates from cultured naturally infected Mugil cephalus made on trypticase soya agar and added different concentrations of NaCI (1 .5 to 8% NaCI).
2. The biochemical characterization of isolates by tube method agreed with the results obtained by the API2OE system.
3. Two isolates were identified as V. anguilarum, 6 isolates as V. ordalli and 2 isolates as V. parahaemolyticus.
4. The following tests were positive in both types of tests (traditional method and API2OE strips): oxidase, production of acetone, gelatin.
