Abstract

Stroke is a sudden neurological incident related to impaired cerebral blood supply which may caused by hemorrhage, embolism or thrombosis resulting in ischemia to the brain. Stroke is more prevalent in elderly population because of atherosclerosis and hypertension. Stroke also occurs in younger patient as result of aneurysm, hypertension, and the use of some birth control pills and drug abuse. The clinical manifestation of stroke vary depending on the area of the brain affected stroke in the right hemisphere typically causes aphasia and dysarthrai, left sided paralysis, or paresis, Apraxia, impairment judgment increased emotional liability. A stroke in left hemisphere can cause receptive or expressive aphasia, right side paralysis and/ or paresis, sensory loss and homonymous hemianposia. Stroke patient need extensive nursing care, this nursing care focus on acute care maintenance of vital function, prevention of complication and the initiation of rehabilitation in the hospital. The main objective of present study was to assess the educational needs of nurses interns about nursing care of patient having stroke; assess the nursing care of patient having stroke; assess the nursing care actually given to the patient with stroke in neurological department and critical care unit; formulate and apply an inservice program on caring of patients with stroke using nursing care process; and evaluate the initial and retained educational development for nurse interns immediately and after 3 months after the inservices program.
