STUI)IES ON MAREKS DISEASE
IN COMMERCIAL BROILER CHICKENS
The present study was mainly dedicated to investigate the prevalanceof Marek’s disease herpesvirus (MDV) in fèction among 50 commercial broiler flocks of > 6—7 weeks of age, 25 of which were slaughtered at three poultry processing plants ( Al—Mabrouk, Faliji Mammoun and El—Sharq Al-Awsat) and other 25 flocks on farms locited at various districts in Northen Delta (Alexandria I3ehera and Kai’r El— Sheikh) over the peroid December 1 997_ August 2U00. The objective was whether vaccination would be justifiable to control the in fction’?
for his purpose. Marek’s disease virus (MDV) isolation trials were attempted tl’om 25 apparently healthy commercial broiler flocks slaughtered at processing plants. Out of 60 representive hepari nazied blood samples collected per flock, 6 pools of’ bu fl coat were prepared and examined virologically. Only pools fl’om 3 flocks (I 2 o) yielded evtopathogenic agents after 3 passages in duck cm hr\ 0 Li hroblast ( L E E ) and chicken em br\ o brob last (Cl F’ cultures, hich were identified as MDVs by AGPT against reference MDV antiserum.
