Abstract

Infection control is one of the most important functions a nurse can perform. The purpose of this study was to assess nurses knowledge and practice of infection control precautions. The study was conducted at cardiac and emergency care units at El-Zagazig University Hospital.Sixty diploma nurses were working in the previously mentioned settings and were constituted the study sample. Data collection was done through a questionnaire consisted of 54 items, which was developed by the investigator, and answered by the nurses. Another tool was an observation checklist which developed by El-Shamy (2001) and used to observe nurses practice of infection control precautions. Results of the study revealed that, nurses level of knowledge was acceptable with unacceptable practice about infection control precautions.General infection control precaution bad practice related to wash their hands before handling equipment highest performance score was related to chest tube care and tracheal suction. While least performance score related to disposing of waste, also, handling needle care. There was a positive correlation between nurse’s knowledge and their practice, while this relation was not statistically significant, except the item of disposing of waste has a significant.-Conclusion, nurse’s knowledge was better than their practice related to infection control precautions of ICUs at Z.U.H.-The study main recommendation was, to develop an infection control committee for Zagazig university hospital. Including nursing director and infection control nurses at each unit.
