Abstract

The world health organization ( 1984 ) acknowledges the importance of the consumer’s perspective in health care evaluation. But, the voices of consumers of mental health services are too rarely heard. Shields, (1985 ); Clifford et al., suggested that consumers of mental health services have a unique perspective on nursing care but their views are too rarely sought. The majority of studies and articles regarding ECT concentrate on one of three areas which are its controversial in nature, technical advances in its administration and legal ramifications of its use and regulation. Comparatively little information is available on attitudes of mental health nurses about ECT. Nurses have an important and active role to play in ensuring that patients receive accurate information about the treatment, and to simplify and reinforce the explanation provided by the treatment, and to simplify and reinforce the explanation provided by the treatment, and to simplify and reinforce the explanation provided by the psychiatrist.
