Abstract

The Umbellifereae is the richest family in species containing furocoumarins. The highest concentrations of these compounds were found in the fruits. Among Umbellifereae, Ammi majus L was regarded as one of the most important commercial sources for furocoumarins and also one of the most important medicinal plants grown in Egypt. Ammi majus L. is rich of some principle furocoumarins such as bergapten (5-MOP), imperatorin, isopimpinellin, marmesin, xanthotoxin (8-MOP), and xanthotoxol. Some of these compounds were no longer used in medicine as photochemotherapy for psoriasis.
