Abstract

To achieve the goals of any industrial chemical process, the process variables must be successfully controlled. Inorder to accomplish this, accurate measurements of these process variables have to be carried out. As flow measurement is one of the most frequently applied in industry, a large number of different types of flowmeters was introduced to the market over the years, which although gave a better chance of achieving more accurate measurements at lower costs, it also made it more difficult to select the most appropriate flowmeter for a specific application.
The survey of literatutre revealed a difficiency in the presence of computer applications that truly aided in the selection of commercially available flowmeters. An expert system was developed to fulfil this purpose. It selects the most suitable flowmeter(s) for any industrial application from a total of 75 flowmeters.
The system’s performance was evaluated by comparing its recommendations for flowmeters with the already existing and operating flowmeters at three different industrial plants representing three fields of chemical industries. The developed system’s
