Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess self-esteem and identify its’ correlates among cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. A sample of convenience of 60-cancer patient (12 males and 48 females), were assigned for chemotherapy were the subjects of this study. The tools utilized to collect data related to this study were (a. A modified form of the Rosenberg’s Global self-esteem scale adopted from Rosenberg, (1965), that was adapted and translated in to Arabic language, tested by Garas, Ahmed and Badr (1991). The scale was designed to measure the global negative and positive self-attitudes. (b) Semi-structured interviewing questionnaire; this includes sociodemographic and medical background data sheet. This study was conducted at out patient clinics of the oncology department, Shebin El-Kom university Hospital. The results revealed that even though of patients had low self esteem yet it become worsen after the first cycle of receiving chemotherapy, as there was statistical significant difference between self-esteem before & after first cycle and a slight improvement in self-esteem among the studied subjects in the last cycle as compared to after first cycle of chemotherapy. Presence of weight loss nausea and vomiting, alopecia, dyspnea were the side effects documented as correlates of low self-esteem among the studied subjects while others such as anorexia, diarrhea & other symptoms did not reach the level of significance among the studied subjects. In conclusion: it was documented that the studied subjects demonstrated low to moderate self-esteem before chemotherapy, which was declined was after the first cycles & by completion of cycle an increase in self-esteem were observed.Strategies for supporting patients during chemotherapy were recommended. Replication of the study on a larger probability sample was highly recommended to achieve generalizable results.
