Abstract

A problem that occurs frequently in control engineering is to control an output of a system so that the output is maintained within restrict bounds. Violation of the bounds results in unacceptable, and perhaps catastrophic, operation. The system is said to be critical. Za!cian’s method of inequalities; described in this thesis, is ideal for the design of such control systems.
‎By using the method of inequalities; controllers for linear systems were designed such that the output response for the systems satisfies certain prescribed constraints.
‎The method of inequalities depends on three mam algorithms, which are executed sequentially by using a computer. A program for the method of inequalities was developed by using MATLAB 5.3 such that single variable and multivariable control systems could be dealt with in addition to digital control systems developed a program for the method of inequalities.
‎”,
‎Some new functions were introduced during the development of the proposed
‎program in order to make the program more interactive and assure the potential of the
‎method.
‎The proposed program was applied to three practical single variable control system in the civilian and military fields; also the program is applied to two practical systems in order to design digital controllers such that the closed loop output response satisfies certain constraints.
‎The difficult problem of multivariable control system design was tackled in two steps. The first step is by decoupling the multivariable system and second step is by considering each decoupled input-output subsystem as an independent single variable system.
‎The proposed program is interactive and easy to be used in addition for its ability to include new performance indices for the output response; which make it suitable to deal with a broad band of critical control systems.
