Abstract

Variceal bleeding is the most serious complication of portal hypertension , It may complicate previously diagnosed cirrhosis or may be the first manifestation of chronic liver disease .. Sclerotherapy has been widely used in the treatment of active variceal bleeding and even for the primary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding . Variceal band ligation was developed 10 years ago . It is at least as effective as sclerotherapy but fewer9 sessions are required to eradicate varices . EVL is now used as a standard technique for treatment of active variceal bleeding .
Application of clinical , Laboratory or endoscopic parameters to guide prophylactic therapy for variceal hemorrhage has not been established . There is a need for a test that can allow accurate identification of patients at risk of variceal bleeding . so allowing the ohysicians to optimize prophylactic therapy hemorrhage ( Buukat ., et al 1993)
The aim of this work was to study the portal hemodynamic changesthat might occure during active variceal bleeding and one week after cessation of the bleeding which may be of help in predicting cirrhotic patients at high risk of variceal bleeding . It aims also to evaluate the effect of early injection sclaerotherapy versus band ligation on the portal hemodynamics in the different groups of cirrhotic patients
115 cirrhotic patients were included in this study , they were classified into two main groups.
