Abstract

Adolescence is a time of intense physical, social, congnitive and sexual development. So education about menstruation needs to start at an early age before girls reach puberty. The purpose of this study was to improve the knowledge and hygienic menstrual practices of young females. The study sample consisted of 200 female students at preparatory schools in Shebin-Elkom and ElShohadaa. The mean age was 16±13.4 for the total sample. Subjects were pre and post tested. The study used interviewing questionnaire sheet to collect demographic data, knowledge related to anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system and menstrual cycle, menstruation and sources of students’ knowledge about menstruation. Also, Measurement of weight, height (body mass index), skin fold thickness, mid arm muscle area were taken. The study revealed that, all the studied sample reported that the school curriculum did not contain information about menstruation and mothers were mainly their source of information. There was a highly significant correlations in knowledge gain from the pre-test in the post and retention of knowledge about puberty, female reproductive system, menstruation and the relation between menstruation’s occurrence and pregnancy for the intervention group. In addition, there was a highly significant correlations in knowledge gain from the pre-test in the post and retention of intervention group’s knowledge about the relationship between menstruation’s occurrence and pregnancy. Like wise there was a shift in their knowledge toward using nonmedical pain relief and a chnge in their dietary and hygienic practices.
