Abstract When large harmonic producing loads are added to an industrial power plant system, it is good to analyze the impact on the power system at the design stage. Such harmonics produced by discontinuous conducting devices and non linear loads created recognized problems for most power distribution system. These problems such as, the maloperation of important control and protection equipment and the over loading of power apparatus and systems. This research presents the analytical technique used to minimize the effect of power systems harmonics on the power systems. The study included harmonic modeling analysis, measuring and calculating harmonics. This research describes a software that was developed to perform harmonic analysis on digitized current or voltage waveforms. Problems with the installation of capacitor bank for power factor improvement purposes are also described. The research presents two approaches work to reduce the amount of harmonic distortion on the power system. The first approach is the design of a tuned filter, general recommendations and considerations on the harmonic filter design are presented. The second approach is based on introducing the basic idea of a new method using a harmonic generator. A case study is presented based on a typical paper mill where a large static power converter was added to the power system. |
