Abstract

Global Environmental concerns and the ever-increasing needs for energy sources, particularly in the developing countries, in the recent years, have caused a great interest in renewable energy. This results in a great development in the use of new energy sources such as wind. Harnessing electrical energy from wind power is a cost effective and cleaner option.
Induction generators are suitable for operation by wind turbines. As a more robust machine compared to other types of machines, the squirrel cage induction machine can tolerate greater exposure to hard weather elements, which is critical for successful operation in remote locations,. Furthermore, the easy maintenance of the induction machines in addition to its simpler construction and lower cost makes it a good choice for those developing countries having limited technological and financial resources.
This work presents the modeling and control of a wind driven self excited induction generators. The wind energy sources, characteristics, hazards and method to transform it into mechanical energy is discussed. The modeling of the SE1G is presented in details. The effect of the variation of loading, excitation capacitance and speed on the output voltage and frequency is presented. The theory of the static VAR compensator is discussed. The theory of the static VAR compensator is then used to control the magnetizing VARs required by the Induction generator. The control is done using the hysteresis PWM inverter.
