Abstract

Bell’s palsy is an acute unilateral facial weakness of obscure etiological factor. Some studies consider Bell’s palsy to be a mononeuropathy, while others consider it to be the only overt manifestation of a more wide pathological condition.
This study was designed to determine the possible association of central manifestations in Bell’s palsy patients.
Thirty patients diagnosed as Bell’s palsy were selected in this study. In addition, 15 healthy subjects matching the same age and sex of the patients, were included in this study as a control group.
History taking, clinical examination, electrophysiological studies including direct facial nerve stimulation, blink reflex, TSEPs, BAEPs, and VEPs were done for both groups.
History taking showed that 33.3% of examined patients had manifestations suggestive of viral prodrome few days before, the onset of facial weakness. Regarding manifestations besides facial weakness, 30% of studied patients expressed loss of taste, 56% of patients had dysacusis, and facial parasthesia was found in 50% of included patients.
Clinical grading of the facial muscles according to House-Brackman grading system showed the majority of patients were grade V.
