Abstract This study discusses the removal of iron and manganese from water using different methods of treatment and how lime influence rate of removal in each system as AN ph adjusting agent. the study includes the following methods of treatment: 1) aeration reaction and sedimentation-filtration: aeration is applied by using diffused air from compressor. it is found that, in reaction basin, the time required to obtain the best efficiency for both reaction and sedimentation is 60 min. the reaction basin is followed by the passage of the water through a sand filter with 9 in. total depth. lime is used to provide 3 different ph values (normal 8.5-9.5). all experiments are repeated in every case at least 3 times. 2) the second method is chlorination -reacition and sedimentation filteration : this system is operated under the same conditions of the first except that, oxidation process is done by using calcium hypochlorite as a source of chlorine in oxidizing both iron and manganese. 3) the third method is aeration- chlori nation reaction and sedimentation-filteration which is a combination of both the first and second systems. both aeration and chlorination are used for oxidizing iron and manganese. A reaction time equal to 30 min. only is provided as oxidation process is very effective by using aeration and chlorination together. |
