Abstract

Three-dimensional imaging is being used world-wide to evaluate the fetus. It adds clarity to the diagnosis of many syndromes in utero. Since the only power that separates the fetus from medical therapy is maternal autonomy, visual prenatal diagnosis leads to increased responsibility in the counseling of parents. This is especially true regarding the medical and emotional anticipation of neonatal outcome for congenital cardiac syndromes.
Congenital heart disease is now the leading cause of infant death related to birth defects. Structural abnormalities of the heart are found in up to 1% of live births. The value of prenatal diagnosis is obvious as the natural history, treatment, and prognosis will vary depending on the anatomic findings. Major cardiac lesions can lead to in utero hyDROPs fetalis, and/or affect immediate neonatal health, creating the need for tertiary neonatal or pediatric surgery.
