Abstract

The study was undertaken during the assessment phase on (50) parents of the mentally retarded children who were enrolled in two schools for mentally handicapped children, (EL-Bagor and Shebin EL-Kom) during the academic year (1989-1990). The purpose of this study was to assess the parent’s knowledge about the mental retardation, the problems they face with their mentally handicapped children and their management of these problems. Accordingly, developing, implementing and evaluating a health educational program to help those parents handing their mentally handicapped children, and adjusting to their problems.
The program was developed after extensive literature review The study was undertaken during the assessment phase on (50) parents of the mentally retarded children who were enrolled in two schools for mentally handicapped children, (EL-Bagor and Shebin EL-Kom) during the academic year (1989-1990). The purpose of this study was to assess the parent’s knowledge about the mental retardation, the problems they face with their mentally handicapped children and their management of these problems. Accordingly, developing, implementing and evaluating a health educational program to help those parents handing their mentally handicapped children, and adjusting to their problems.and implemented on 26 mothers, who at least are able to read and write. The evaluation of the program was done after 12 weeks of its implementation regarding the mothers’ knowledge about the mental retardation, the right given to the mentally retarded children, and ways of handling children’s problems, effect of the program in teaching the mentally handicapped children by their parents to depend on themselves. There were evaluation of other items such as speech coherence, control of their impulsive acts ... etc. Parents’ opinion regarding the teaching instructional methods, holistic approach of the program, appropriateness of the program content and time, topics adequacy, and the organization and application of the program materials. Then after 24 weeks, there was an evaluation of the effect of the program in decreasing higher parental pressure. Also, effect of the program regarding teaching children by their parents t,o depend on themselves, speak coherently and control their impulsive acts ... etc. The research instruments utilized in this study included a questionnaire sheet, and standardized test for assessment of parental pressure. These instruments were used as pre- and post- test after implementation of the program. Results of pre- and post-test were tabulated, statistically analyzed and interpreted.
