Abstract

The skin serves several functions: photoprotection, thermoregulation, cutaneous circulation, immune and barrier functions. The effective functioning of the skin is vital to the newborn.
<brThe outermost epidermal layer, the stratum corneum, represents the end stage of keratinization. The corneocytes are filled with water-retaining keratin proteins surrounded by a cornified cell envelope and intercellular lipids. The cells remain connected to each other by a protein bridge called desmosomes. The resulting structure is the natural physical barrier of the skin.
