Abstract

It is evident that the random urban expansion of Alexandria continued in the ation of ”Alex. 2005” comprehensive plan as before. This expansion occurred at the ise of vacant land, vegetated areas, and Lake Mariout respectively. Urban sprawl was ten place in both eastern and western districts but the growth westwards was the icance one. ”Amria” district was the most district exposed to horizontal expansion jwed at lower extent by ”Burj Al-Arab”, ”Al-Montaza”, and ”Shark” respectively. It is from studying the population profile and growth pattern of various districts to say that edge districts particularly ”Amria” become an area of attraction during last decade and population growth continues in these districts but nearly stagnates in the others. It is safe to say that ”Amria” district received about 73 % of total urban growth in idria Govemorate since 1985. This may not only attributed to legal restrictions in the but also to the availability of work opportunities and easy land in the west with good sibility for construction.
Except Burj Al-Arab Al-Jadidah, bedwins and speculators play the role of planners western districts of Alexandria Govemorate. They irregularly divided the icntal land for construction purposes to achieve the maximum profits regardless of /, environmental considerations, or planning will. As a result of housing crisis Alexandria and the significant population growth as well as the needs for summer no sensible time passed until a very random and uncontrolled urban growth lied with major disruptions and environmental problems attacked the whole area. Igrowth often starts along transportation corridors and coastal areas and then invade areas. Agami, King Mariout, Burj Al - Arab, and Sidi Krier are examples of areas to this trend. Although well - designed tourism villages were developed by tive associations and constructions firms along the north western coast
