Abstract

A descriptive comparative study was conducted on 100 chronically ill school age children and their mothers in Shebin- Elkom and Cairo hospitals compared to 50 healthy children and their mothers. The aim of the study were to : 1- develop an adaptation assessment tool. 2-Identify factors that may affect children’s adaptation to chronic illness. 3-Assess children’s adaptation to chronic illness. Children were considered chronically ill, if they had irreversible pathologic alteration of their health status, a period of medical supervision, treatment, or care that required three months or more one month of continuos hospitalization ( Leff and Chain, 1982).Several tools were used to fulfill the aims of this study these tools were 1-An interview questionnaire for mothers and chronically ill children including, biosocial characteristics, illness experience for chronically ill children and their mothers with the disease. 2-A family coping index. 3-An uncertainty assessment scale. 4-Two psychological tests to assess anxiety and depression of mothers and their children.
